The population served includes individuals and family members of those in recovery from a three county area including Kent, Ottawa, Ionia and Muskegon Counties. The goals of the Alano Club are to provide support and education about alcoholism, support the families to reconnect and to allow a safe environment for those in recovery. We offer Alannon and Alateen meetings for those family and friends of the alcoholic to be able to share their feelings and get support for themselves. The Alano Club of Kent County was incorporated in the 1960’s. At that time five men decided that those in the recovering community needed a place for Alcoholic Anonymous meetings on a regular basis. They began at 330 Bond Street. A doctor that had worked with alcoholics donated his house at 1020 College to the Alano Club. Since that time, many people in recovery and their families have found great strength and support at the Alano Club. The main purpose was to provide the meeting space to AA; next there were Al/Anon, Alateen and Alatot meetings added. The club offered numerous rooms and meetings at multiple times a day, convenient for anyone who wanted to attend. Currently, the Alano Club holds 91 different meeting a week. Over 1500 people are served by this facility monthly. The Alano Club is more than simply a building to hold meetings; the club is a fellowship center for those learning to live a life without alcohol. Most who have entered recovery had all of their social friends and activities around alcohol. Having removed the alcohol, many find themselves alone and lonely, with many empty hours. The Alano Club can fill this need by offering a cafeteria area to form friendships and share a story or two. Many times families are torn apart by this disease. The Alano Club offers activities to bind the family together. If being reunited with the biological family is not possible, then there is an opportunity to create a recovery-based family. The holidays have festive meals prepared to share and learn to celebrate sober. Dances, picnics and events are sponsored by the Alano Club. This is yet another way the club rises to meet the challenges of the recovering person. By finding new activity bases help to learn to create relationships. For many, they found the Alano Club of Kent County through a treatment center. Pathfinders Resources, Jellema House, Our Hope, Salvation Army, Project Rehab, Arbor Circle, WEMAC, and other treatment centers tell residents to come to find fellowship and recovery through our organization. Similarly, the community service departments of Kent County Circuit Court and 61st District send individuals to complete service to the community here. Many of those sent to complete this requirements, end up staying and finding recovery. This will help curb the cost to the public of drinking and driving. Finally, the Alano Club of Kent County has become a community partner in the “Positive Influences” campaign. The goal is to reduce teen drinking. This is accomplished by holding community forums, radio broadcasts, and support materials. Together with WGVU, Grand Valley State University and Attitude Matters, the Alano Club has created dialogue between parents and kids about alcohol.
